LiFePO4 Backup Storage for Homes on Unstable Grids

On a weak distribution grid, power does not fail once a season. It fails in short, repeated interruptions, usually at the worst time of day, with voltage sag that trips air conditioners and restarts inverters. Rooftop PV alone cannot cover this, because without storage the system shuts down the moment the grid drops. This configuration pairs a low-voltage lithium storage unit with a hybrid inverter so a household keeps its cooling and lighting through an interruption, and so an installer can wire, commission and service every home the same way.

Illustrative application scenario, based on the requirements we quote for. It does not represent a named customer or a completed reference project.

Residential energy storage · Low-voltage platform

This configuration is quoted for residential solar installers and EPCs running a steady flow of detached and townhouse installations in areas where the distribution grid is weak: short interruptions several times a week, voltage sag on hot afternoons, and homeowners who want the air conditioning to stay on rather than whole-home independence. The installer needs one low-voltage platform that a crew can learn once and then quote, wire and commission without variation between jobs.

Constraints

What this site limits

  • Required backup hours per outage set the pack energy, not the daily household consumption
  • Where the enclosure is placed decides the ingress protection and the ventilation path
  • Charging from an unstable grid requires wide input tolerance and no grid back-feed
  • Household circuits are divided into backed-up and non-backed-up loads before installation
  • Maintenance has to be possible without opening cells, ideally without a site visit
Application scenario

The challenge

Homeowners buy solar to cut the bill, but the complaint that comes back most often is reliability rather than cost. In weak-grid neighbourhoods short interruptions are routine, and voltage sag during peak cooling hours trips air conditioners and restarts inverters; a compressor that drops out can take minutes to come back, so only a continuously supplied load hides the event from the household. Rooftop PV alone does not address it, because without storage a grid interruption shuts the whole system down. The friction we see most often sits on the installation side: mixed storage brands quoting into the same bill of materials, communication protocols that do not match, a separate monitoring app for the battery, and low-voltage cutoffs that differ from unit to unit so an evening reserve is never quite predictable. Crews then improvise per job, and anything improvised has to be supported afterwards.

Our solution

Origin Drive Future supplies the YD-HS-10 low-voltage wall-mount storage unit with the YD-HY-5 hybrid inverter as the standard package for a residential range. The low-voltage architecture lets a single installer handle the unit without high-voltage certification, and the battery-to-inverter link uses one RS485 cable with charge parameters set from the battery, so the configuration is identical on every job. The pack’s continuous discharge rating covers air-conditioning inrush, and the inverter transfers to backup within a defined window that keeps a running compressor from tripping. Backup reserve is set per household, so the evening reserve is a configured parameter rather than an outcome of the day’s load. Monitoring runs through the inverter app, with the battery reporting on the same interface. The enclosure suits indoor installation with a slim wall profile for townhouse layouts, and the package ships with a quick-start card in local language plus a commissioning checklist. Storage warranty is 5 years, extendable to 8 years, and the platform is built to be compliant with target standards: UN38.3 / IEC 62619 / CE / RoHS.
Application scenario

What this configuration supports

A household load carried through a short grid interruption without anyone touching the system. The pack is sized to the inverter continuous envelope so air-conditioning inrush sits inside the discharge rating rather than at its edge, and the backup reserve is a configured parameter rather than a runtime guess. Because the battery holds the charge parameters and speaks one protocol, the same configuration repeats across a run of homes on a single commissioning checklist, with solar, battery and load on one monitoring interface. Swap-ready packs with cell-level telemetry keep the installation serviceable, and a household that later adds load can extend the pack count on the same platform.

We are not asked for a payback story. We are asked for the air conditioning to keep running when the grid drops, and that is what a quoted configuration has to guarantee.

Delivery and documents

How the order is executed

The terms below apply to the batteries and hardware in this configuration. Voltage, capacity, quantity and destination are written into the quotation, and the items below are confirmed in writing before production.

Minimum order20 units per model for a production order. Single units are available as paid evaluation samples, credited against your first production order.
Lead time25 days after the deposit is received for a standard batch. Tooling, custom BMS or project-specific capacity is scheduled separately and confirmed on the quotation.
PaymentT/T: 30% deposit with the order, balance against the bill of lading copy.
ShipmentTell us the destination port or door. The quotation states the Incoterm and the freight option we are quoting, so the delivered cost is comparable across suppliers.
PackingPacked to the packing instruction applying to UN3480 or UN3481, terminals protected, lithium battery mark and hazard label applied, pallets strapped and shrink-wrapped.
Documents with the goodsPacking list, commercial invoice, MSDS, UN38.3 test summary and report, shipper’s declaration for dangerous goods, and the bill of lading or air waybill.
Per unitDatasheet for your model and the end-of-line test record for that serial number.
Warranty3–5 years, depending on model, written into the contract.
HS classificationLithium-ion accumulators, heading 8507.60. The national tariff line and duty rate are confirmed against your destination before the order is placed.
