Home Storage Standardised for Off-Grid and Weak-Grid Households

Off-grid and weak-grid households cycle their storage every day, powering a fridge, lighting, a television and phone charging through the evening, usually on a mix of lead-acid and short-life lithium packs. Failures trace back to mismatched chargers or wrong charge settings as often as to the cells, and sites are spread out, so every avoidable service visit matters. We standardise this segment on the YD-HS series wall-mount LiFePO4 platform with the YD-HY hybrid inverter family, so usable capacity matches the design assumptions and faults can be triaged from BMS data before anyone travels.

Off-Grid & Weak-Grid Residential Storage

A solar EPC contractor installing off-grid and hybrid PV systems for rural and peri-urban households, where the grid is absent or unreliable and the evening load is the design case.

Constraints

What this site limits

  • System size follows the worst month of the year, not the annual average yield
  • Inverter surge rating has to cover pump and refrigeration start-up, not only the running load
  • Charging from a weak grid needs wide input tolerance and no back-feed to the grid
  • Installation is done by local technicians, so wiring and labelling follow one printed diagram
  • Units must be movable by hand or light cart where there is no vehicle access
Application scenario

The challenge

Home storage in off-grid and weak-grid areas is usually built up package by package, so a portfolio often mixes flooded lead-acid, gel and unbranded lithium packs. The duty cycle is harsh by residential standards: households cycle their storage daily, often twice, and expect a fridge, lighting, a television and phone charging to run through the evening, so deep discharge is routine and the installer has no control over how the batteries are treated. Service is the other pressure point: failures trace back to mismatched chargers or incorrect charge settings as often as to the cells, and sites are spread out, so every avoidable visit costs a technician’s day. What this segment needs is one storage platform that can be standardised across a package range, with usable capacity that matches the design assumptions and diagnostics that allow remote triage.

Our solution

Origin Drive Future supplies the YD-HS series wall-mount LiFePO4 storage unit in 5 kWh and 10 kWh configurations, paired with the YD-HY hybrid inverter family. The LiFePO4 chemistry tolerates daily deep cycling, and the integrated BMS enforces charge and discharge limits that protect the pack from the over-discharge patterns common in weak-grid use. Each unit communicates over RS485 with the inverter, so charge parameters are set by the battery rather than by installer guesswork, removing the most common cause of premature failure. The BMS also logs cycle count, maximum discharge depth and temperature history, and a service team can read these over a mobile connection during a first-line call, deciding whether a site visit is needed. Enclosures are IP54-rated for dusty conditions, and the units accept generator or grid charging where available. Units are built to target standards: UN38.3 / IEC 62619 / CE / RoHS. The platform is covered by a 5-year warranty, extendable to 8 years, and can be standardised across a household package range on the same two storage models, with spare BMS boards kept as service stock.

What this configuration supports

One storage platform covers the whole household package range, so the YD-HS capacity classes and the YD-HY inverter replace a mixed catalogue of lead-acid and unbranded lithium products. Usable capacity is specified on the same nameplate basis the design assumes, so sizing calculations hold from quote to installation. Because the BMS logs cycle count, maximum discharge depth and temperature history, a first-line call can decide between a remote charge-parameter change and a site visit, which keeps service planning predictable on scattered sites. IP54 enclosures and RS485-controlled charging suit dusty conditions and generator or grid top-up, where available. Daily deep cycling, often twice a day, sits inside the duty envelope the LiFePO4 pack is specified for.

On a first-line call, the BMS history is the first thing to read: it tells the service team whether a site visit is needed or a charge parameter should be adjusted instead.

How the order is executed

The terms below apply to the batteries and hardware in this configuration. Voltage, capacity, quantity and destination are written into the quotation, and the items below are confirmed in writing before production.

Minimum order20 units per model for a production order. Single units are available as paid evaluation samples, credited against your first production order.
Lead time25 days after the deposit is received for a standard batch. Tooling, custom BMS or project-specific capacity is scheduled separately and confirmed on the quotation.
PaymentT/T: 30% deposit with the order, balance against the bill of lading copy.
ShipmentTell us the destination port or door. The quotation states the Incoterm and the freight option we are quoting, so the delivered cost is comparable across suppliers.
PackingPacked to the packing instruction applying to UN3480 or UN3481, terminals protected, lithium battery mark and hazard label applied, pallets strapped and shrink-wrapped.
Documents with the goodsPacking list, commercial invoice, MSDS, UN38.3 test summary and report, shipper’s declaration for dangerous goods, and the bill of lading or air waybill.
Per unitDatasheet for your model and the end-of-line test record for that serial number.
Warranty3–5 years, depending on model, written into the contract.
HS classificationLithium-ion accumulators, heading 8507.60. The national tariff line and duty rate are confirmed against your destination before the order is placed.
