Backup Storage for Bangkok Homes on an Unstable Grid

A Bangkok residential solar installer added EcoDyny LiFePO4 backup storage to its PV packages to address frequent short outages and voltage sag. Standardising on one storage platform simplified installation, cut wiring time and improved the reliability customers actually experienced.

A residential solar installer in Bangkok serving roughly 1,200 detached and townhouse customers per year, mostly in greater Bangkok and on the eastern seaboard.

The challenge

The installer's customers were buying solar to reduce bills, but their most frequent complaint was reliability rather than cost. Greater Bangkok and the eastern seaboard see frequent short interruptions, typically 30 seconds to 15 minutes, plus voltage sag that causes air conditioners to trip and inverters to restart. Rooftop PV alone does not address this: without storage, a grid interruption shuts the system down, and restarting a compressor can take several minutes. The installer had tried two storage brands on an ad hoc basis and run into installation friction, including mismatched communication protocols, separate monitoring apps and inconsistent low-voltage cutoffs that occasionally left customers without power overnight. Each installation took an extra day, and callback rates on storage-equipped jobs were high. The installer wanted one platform it could train a large installation crew on, with backup capability that handled air-conditioning inrush current and a monitoring interface it could hand to customers without a second app.

Our solution

EcoDyny provided the ED-HS-10 low-voltage wall-mount storage unit with the ED-HY-5 hybrid inverter as the standard package for the installer's residential range. The low-voltage architecture lets a single installer handle the unit without high-voltage certification, and the battery-to-inverter link uses one RS485 cable with charge parameters set from the battery, so configuration is identical on every job. The pack's continuous discharge rating covers air-conditioning inrush, and the inverter switches to backup within a defined transfer window that keeps a running compressor from tripping. Backup reserve level is set per household, so customers keep a guaranteed evening reserve rather than discovering an empty battery at 8 pm. Monitoring runs through the inverter's own app, with the battery reporting through the same interface. Enclosures suit indoor installation with a slim wall profile matched to Thai townhouse layouts, and EcoDyny supplied a Thai-language quick-start card plus a commissioning checklist the crew now follows on every job.

Results

The installer standardised on the platform and completed 1,240 storage-equipped residential systems in the first year. Average installation time for a storage-equipped job fell from 2.5 days to 1.7 days, and the storage-related callback rate dropped from 11% to 2.4%. In customer-reported outage events, 96% of systems carried the household load for the full interruption duration, and air-conditioning trip complaints fell sharply once the backup reserve setting was applied consistently. Customers using a single app for solar and battery monitoring raised fewer support calls, and the installer moved crew members from troubleshooting to new installations, lifting monthly capacity by roughly 30% without adding headcount.

Our customers do not buy storage for the payback period. They buy it so the air conditioner keeps running when the grid drops, and that is now what we can promise.
